Emerging Markets staging a comeback

After coming under sustained pressure in 2021, the time is ripe for a resurgence in emerging markets.

Emerging market assets have come under considerable pressure in 2021, in particular with the continued spread of the Delta virus variant, negative news emanating from China (growth slowdown, regulation crackdown, and the housing slowdown alongside the Evergrande fallout), and the prospective tapering by the Fed.

Yet we now believe most of the bad news can now be put safely behind us. Delta appears to have peaked, the vaccine roll-out in many low-income countries has sped-up and there are positive signs that China’s policy stance is becoming more accommodative, whilst the Fed’s tapering will be gradual, limiting its impact globally.

Meanwhile the long-term growth story in emerging markets continues to offer opportunities for global investors to increase their allocation. The strong economic growth momentum in developed markets is expected to slow with the gap with emerging markets narrowing in favour of emerging markets.

With global yields at historic low levels, emerging market fixed income offers a source of income and emerging market equity offers good value in terms of relative valuations. The growing demand for green bonds globally also strengthen the potential for emerging green bond markets and offers a means of playing the green transition.

Nonetheless, investors need to remain selective, active and flexible. Emerging markets should not be treated as a single asset class and close monitoring of growth, inflation and geopolitical risks is essential.

China in the spotlight

China assets are increasingly shaking off their dependence on the United States and China has continued in its pursuit to become a leading economic super-power. Whilst its assets have suffered recently, the medium to long-term outlook remains constructive and we believe China may become a core, standalone component of global portfolios in the future, with Chinese debt in particular offering a source of yield and diversification.
