Deputy CEO & head of Institutional division and ESG, Jean-Jacques BarbÃĐris, discusses the retirement landscape, consolidation, industry trends and energy transition with IPE Editor, Liam Kennedy.

Looking at opportunities for asset managers in liquid markets, BarbÃĐris gives his view on some of the changes being seen across the industry. Consolidation of the asset management industry is much spoken about, but BarbÃĐris believes institutional market consolidation is evolving in parallel. The asset managers who benefit will be the biggest or smallest, but profitable, firms, leaving the mid-sized players in a complicated situation.

The interview also explores Amundi’s ambitions in the retirement market, after a series of wins in the UK with Nest and the People’s Pension, as well as successes in its outsourced tech solutions from ALTO.

BarbÃĐris also sees the pivot away from ESG seen in the US as an opportunity for Europe. He sees progress being made in the energy transition:

The fact that the transition is becoming an object of political debate and opposition is, for me, excellent news. It means we’re doing something.
